2014 Marin Ultra Challenge

Inside Trail Racing - Marin Ultra Challenge Half Marathon
Mar 15th 2014
Mill Valley, CA

Originally I had hoped to sign up for the 30k, but a week before the event, when I finally decided to sign up I sadly found out that it was in fact a 35k. I had been training up to 15 miles, so the 18 miles would have already been a stretch, and 21 would have likely let to some kind of injury. So I bailed and signed up for the 13.1 which led to some well deserved redemption in the Marin headlands from The North Face Challenge where stomach cramps crippled my race.

2014 Steep Ravine 25Km

Coastal Trail Runs - Steep Ravine 25km

This was my first attempt at any race over a half marathon. I took it at my own pace, and was pretty pleased with the results.

2013 Recap

Looking back, 2013 was pretty epic.

According to strava, I recorded ~ 3600 miles on bike, and ~ 650 miles on foot.

I finished 41st OA @ Wildflower, which was enough to help push SF Tri Club into 1st place for the Club Competition.

My 5 person team "Tsunami of Hurt" came in first place in the SF Bay Area for Team Bike Challenge, and with our contribution Tesla Motors finished second place in the company competition.

I ran my first Dipsea as an invitational runner and came closer to breaking the coveted 1 hour mark.

I finished Vineman 70.3 in 4 hours 41 minutes for the 3rd consecutive year.

I did my first mtb race on a vintage 26" trek.

I finished my first & second century ride.

I finished second place OA at the Cinderella Trail Half Marathon. An epic sufferfest according to strava.

I ran the fastest mile of my entire life. 5:10 baby.

I came close to finishing top 10 at TNF 13.1, but ended up 16th place OA after some serious cold weather cramping consumed my body on the downhills.

I won my first cyclocross race, and finished 3rd place in the Norcal CX Series for Single Speed B's.

And most importantly I met a girl that is just about as crazy as I am about these things.

2013 The North Face Challenge

2013 TNF 13.1 - December 8th 2013
Mill Valley, CA

December in Marin always has some tricks up its sleeve. A last minute winter storm warning in 2012 cause the race to be canceled. This year the race took place, but with flash 36 degree weather at the start. BURRR.

I had been looking forward to this one for a while. It's in my home town, and it's in one of the most beautiful & challenging places to run anywhere. It also caters to my strengths, or so i thought. The run is comprised of 3 hill climbs, each followed by a fun little descent. I had never done the first climb at anywhere near race pace, but I was pretty confident sitting near the top of the strava leaderboards on #2 & #3 from my preview run 2 weeks prior.

1) Miwok to Wolf Ridge - A casual 1.2 mile 10% grade climb

2) North Face Endurance hill 2 - A steep as hell 0.6 miles, followed by a more mellow 0.8 miles, averaging out to a 1.4 mile 10% grade climb

3) Marincello (Tennessee Valley to Bobcat) - a deceivingly long 1.4 mile 9% grade climb

Fastforward to raceday. As I mentioned before it was freezing...
